As you know at Barcelona Hair Academy we love fun hair trends and this latest one is just that. Sand Hair Art is inspired by souvenir bottles of dyed sand children brought home from beach holidays – and ‘My Little Pony’. Very 90s like most trends at the moment. We think this is a great look for festival season.

So how is this look achieved? First the hair is bleached and then rainbow colours are layered into the hair to create a supernatural look. Our creative team first saw this look on the streets of New York while they were working at Mercedes Benz Fashion week but in general the trend is more of a west coast LA thing.

A less extreme alternative is hair chalking. This is where colored chalk is applied to the hair, and sealed with heat to avoid staining clothes and to stop the colors running into each other. Big bulky braids with colorful hair looks amazing.

Our top tip: If you start with a stronger color range it will last you longer and when it washes out you’ll be left with a more pastel color range.

If you want this hair, bear in mind that the upkeep is pretty major, and bleaching your hair will leave it dry and brittle, so hydration and mild sulfate free shampoos are essential. This isn’t a very long lasting colour solution either – it will wash out easily. But if you don’t mind spending a little time and messing up your bathroom and your towels, you can do a lot at home. Crazy Colors has a great range and if you want to soften them you can dilute them with conditioner for a more of a pastel effect.

It’s hard to create the full rainbow at home, but when the salon job washes out you can dip dye your ends with a couple of tones with a little patience and creativity. I wouldn’t recommend trying out home bleaching because bleach is very chemical and there are so many things that can go wrong, hair breakage being a major risk, and if your looking for the mermaid effect, then you probably want to keep your hair looking shiny and happy.

At Barcelona Hair Academy we love new hair trends and sharing our experience and knowledge – whether you are a professional hairdresser looking for hairdressing courses or just someone who loves hair!
We know that a great hairstyle can make all the difference to our look but there is no denying that some days our hair just won’t play along. Never fear, Barcelona Hair Academy is here! Our Creative team has come up with five hairup ‘How-tos’ that are guaranteed to make you look great and stop you reaching for the scissors.

The Braided Waterfall

Using a tail comb create a low side parting, section off the hair you want to braid in the front and clip the rest of the hair away to make it easier, then divide your section into 3 and start with your inverted braid,

When you reach the temple, start ldropping every 3rd strand to achieve the waterfall effect. When you reach the back of your head, use some bobby pins to secure it in place.

The Braided half and half

Divide the hair from ear to ear with a centre parting, (clip the hair in the back to keep it out of the way). Create two simple braids just above your ears, keep them quite loose and make sure you braid them downwards to keep them flat against your head. Secure the braids with little elastic bands. Once secured loosen them a little to make them a little fatter. Cross the braids over each other and secure them with bobby pins behind each ear, hiding the pins under the braids and making sure the ends are tucked in. Take some strands down to frame your face. Finish with a little spray and you’re done!

The Braided high bun

Start with a high pony tail on the top of your head, make sure you tilt your head back when you secure it with an elastic, so you get it nice and tight in the back. Take a strand from the pony tail and braid it into a simple three strand braid, secure it with an elastic band. Twist the remaining hair to create a bun and secure it with bobby pins. Loosen the braid a little to make it appear bigger, wrap it around the bun and secure with a pin. Use your fingers to create a bit more volume at the front, add a bit of volume powder and finish with spray, using the palms of your hands to tighten the sides.

The Low Textured Ponytail

Start by dividing your hair from ear to ear, then put the back of your hair into a low pony tail and secure it with an elastic band. Divide the remaining hair into three, from temple to temple. Starting on one side twist the hair away from the face, secure it with a bobby pin into the pony tail. Then twist the top section the same way and secure with a pin. Twist the other side the opposite way so both sides look the same. Take a section from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around to hide the pins and then pin it to secure it. Loosen the sections carefully to create a tousled, slept-in effect. Finish with some dry wax powder and a little hairspray

The Simple Chignon

Start by dividing your hair into a low side parting thenbrush it down flat and add a little serum to create shine. Create a low ponytail just behind the ear and secure it with an elastic. Divide the ponytail into four sections, using clips to separate them. Then start by rolling each one of the sections into loops, twisting them a little to flatten them against the scalp and to create movement, and secure them around the ponytail. Finish with some spray to hold it in place and avoid fly-aways.

If you think you need a bit more help with these hairups why not come to our next Styling workshop on July 10th. Check out our events section on our facebook page for more information.

At Barcelona Hair Academy, as hairdressing course experts, we teach our students how to recreate the latest hairstyles and trends

90s fashion – The return of mom jeans

They used to be extremely uncool, and only worn by soccer moms but now they are super hip and all the cool kids are wearing them. These jeans are slightly fitted at the top with a baggy tapered leg and a high waist, and very comfortable! The best hairstyle to go with this fashion is big and casually swept to the side– think 90s supermodels Cindy Crawford or Linda Evangelista. Soft and wavy and very feminine, but less styled then they used to wear it. No need for hot rollers, just sleep with your hair in a braid if your hair is poker straight and you want to create some movement.

Products: Use dust waxes, like Schwartzkopf Dust It, dry shampoo, and a little serum or argan oil to control the frizz.

Top tip: Dry your hair upside down to create volume at the roots. Keep the side parting low and undefined.

Another cool hair trend is the 90s-inspired minimalist bob. Kate Bosworth, always on trend, went for this crop, combining it with a low parting and a little texture at the ends. Emma Stone wears it a little messier and with a grown out fringe, which gives the look more versatility.

Festival Fashion

The festival season is here, and its time to start thinking about getting your look together. At Barcelona Hair Academy we love scrutinizing the celeb looks and predicting new trends. At the ever fabulous Coachella festival prints were big this year, especially big bold colourful ones. Jeans shorts are still going strong, and as far as the hair goes, the looks are simple, a low messy ponytail, a headband to keep hair out of your face or a thrown on hat. If your hair is blond, you can stick some temporary pastel colour mask on your ends for a cool ombre effect.

One of Barcelona’s biggest festival, Primavera Sound is a little more indie and rocky than the californian boho styled festival, but festival goers still take inspiration from the cool Hollywood crowd. The caftan is the one must have item in your wardrobe this year, but the Barcelona way of wearing it is over cropped shorts, and teamed with brogues, Vans or trainers. Pile on the accessories, bracelets, necklaces, rings on your hands. This is not the time to be minimalist or for taking the advice of Coco Chanel, who said that one would always took one accessory off before leaving the house. This is the time to put one more on before dashing out the door, and being late to meet your mates.

We thought Kylie and Kendall Jenner looked amazing at Coachella, Kendall wearing her shorts a little longer, and Kylie with pastel green hair and a white kaftan.

Barcelona hair Academy loves everything about Festivals and especially seeing what hairstyles people are going for. We keep up with all the latest trends to offer our students the best possible training and to help them become amazing hair professionals. For more information about our courses don’t hesitate to contact us through our website.

Celebrities know that every now and then you need to switch things up a little. Or a lot. From cotton candy dye jobs to major chops, these celebrities decided to get made over and we love dissecting the results. Get inspired by these radical changes, Barcelona Hair Academy brings you the best makeovers!

Rihanna went with short red hair at the Met Ball in NYC, but it wasn’t long ago that she was rocking long orange beachy waves on her trip to Hawaii . At the Grammys earlier this year we saw her with a dark bun. We know that Riri loves to change her hair as often as her outfit, and we aren’t complaining! She has managed to master a wide variety of styles and we can’t wait to see what her stylist come up with next.

Also at the Met Gala, Katy Perry wore a short dark wig which suited her to a T. But it is not the first time the celebrity has transformed her style this year. We previously sore her with a black and green bob that then turned red. She is definitely not afraid of trying new things.

It is no surprise that fantasy colours have taken over the celebrity world lately. There are loads of celebrities that have tried to spice up their looks by trying a more edgy, vibrant colour. But for us there is a clear winner:

Kylie Jenner went with many (many) versions of teal this year. She started off with a short ombré that turned into long extensions. She briefly went back to black and then at this year’s Coachella festival she went full aquamarine. But just for the first weekend, because on the second day of the festival she was seen with a bright pink bob. What will be next?

Finally blondes made a big comeback this year, especially for Paris Fashion Week, where Kim Kardashian and Jared Leto surprised us with platinum looks. Kim had tried going blonde for the previous edition of the fashion event, but this time she went with an even more drastic change from her naturally dark brown hair. Meanwhile Jared Leto decided it was time to lose the “Jesus vibe” and appeared with short super blond hair; another of this year’s most radical transformations – and we aren’t even half way in!

What do you think about these transformations? Which one is your favourite and which one are you dying to try out yourself? At Barcelona Hair Academy we love seeing and making these radical changes; if you are looking for advice on style, don’t hesitate to contact us for an appointment at any of our salons. And remember that our hairdressing courses are available all year round!

Boho waves were prominent enough on the spring 2015 runways to be called a hair trend; there are multiple ways of wearing them and Barcelona Hair Academy tells you everything you need to know. Pick your favourite!

For spring 2015, the modern romantic, the cool festival chick, the free-spirited desert girl and the oceanic goddess share the same undone look, all soft flowing waves and pared back beauty. Boho waves may look simple, but they feel sexy and opulent: the perfect hairstyle for right now.

Hippie-chic curls: inspired by the long, carefree hair worn by women during the 60’s, abundant curls morph into relaxed waves. A soft look paired with natural skin, defined eyebrows and bare lips. Super long, light curls.

70’s-inspired effortless, sexy waves: hair hangs below the shoulders in barely there waves. A bit of volume at the crown infuses perfect waves with a hint of edginess, just enough for the look to appear sexy, flirty and cool.

Desert girl waves: light, airy and super easy beach waves that balance minimal silhouettes and heavily lined eyes. Try these with a middle part, soft waves and extensions if you are looking for a fuller style and thicker texture.

Cool girl waves: when spring comes the cool girls will be wearing Chanel and soft, messy waves. With a deep side parting and plenty of texture, this is the boho version of the “just rolled out of bed” look. This hairstyle isn’t supposed to look too pretty, more natural, soft and messy. Pink lipstick and a hint of mascara complete the look.

Soft, messy festival waves: walking the line between undone and super-glam, these waves are the look for the modern-day woman. Cool, messy, sexy waves that ooze laid-back festival style. Pair it up with darkly lined eyes.

Side-parted boho waves: a more bohemian, alternative look, meant to look like its been styled by nature or the sea air; imperfect but in a very beautiful way. These boho waves are styled with a messy parting and pulled back off the face.

For a hint of oceanic goddess and a more summery mood, try styling your boho look with a gold tiara and deconstructed waves.

Now you know all the basics, which one are you going to try out? Barcelona Hair Academy brings you the latest hair trends to keep you up to date with what’s going on in the world of fashion and to help you give your clients the looks they deserve.

At Barcelona Hair Academy, as hairdressing course experts, we teach our students how to recreate the most flattering hairstyles and trends, but we also teach them what not to do. Today we want to show you some of history’s worst hairstyles, in the hope that they never make a comeback!

The mullet.

Both men and women have tried to pull this off over the years and we can’t help but wonder why. A haircut that is business in the front and a party in the back is never going to look good; especially not on someone with the sweet facial features of Scarlett Johansson. She has definitely rocked better hairstyles.

The bowl cut.

This hairstyle was popular during the 80’s and most of the 90’s and it basically looks like someone has put a bowl on your head and cut around it, giving you one of the worst hair trends of all time. Rihanna has tried it out, not once but several times, leaving us wondering if her stylist hates her or if she is just really into the 90’s vibe; which reminds us – she also tried to pull off the rat’s tail, another big no-no.

The comb over.

This hairstyle is most women’s worst nightmare. It was originally created to hide the fact that a man was balding but it doesn’t really hide anything, it just makes it look worse. The best option for balding men is to shave off the rest of their hair and embrace their baldness.

The 80’s perm.

Many celebrities have worn this hairstyle. We don’t blame them, it was a trend and get sucked in; but this is one trend we really hope never makes a come back. Big hair doesn’t necessarily mean bad, but it’s the combination of the curly fringe and the frizz that makes it so unflattering.

As a hair academy, we make sure that our students learn hairstyle do’s and don’ts and how to interpret the best trends. For more information about our hairdressing courses visit our website. Have a great hair day!

At Barcelona Hair Academy, we like to keep one step ahead of the game and our courses are designed with the hottest trends in mind. The art of barbering has been around for centuries, but it has become essential for men who want to look sharp and stylish. Barbering courses usually teach the basics of a good cut but leave out the style and the details that make men’s haircuts and beard styling unique and on trend. As a hair academy that attempts to be the best, we want to talk about 5 beard fundamentals of 2015.

The shadow. This beard works well for men that can grow facial hair quickly and have a good, strong chin. Usually men with this style look like they don’t have time to get a decent shave but, actually, it is necessary to keep the beard tidy, give it shape and make sure it doesn’t look sloppy or messy. Trim just below the jaw line to help outline the jaw.

The short boxed beard. It is an all around strong beard style that works well for those that don’t want to go the full beard route. This beard, one of the most complicated to achieve on barbering courses, is carefully sculpted and requires work to maintain. Using a close crop and defined edges it showcases the cheekbones and helps to outline the jaw. The hairline extends just an inch or so below the chin and doesn’t go all the way to the neck.

Tight beard. The tight beard comes in close on the face and uses a trimmer setting of about 2 millimeters. The beard provides the face with definition and strong character and it’s best recommended when the client is able to grow hair higher up on the chin. The tight beard stops midway up the cheek and connects fairly evenly with the mustache line.

Olde English. This incorporates several beard styles into one manly and rugged look. Think mutton chops with a thick beard that goes all the way to the chin line; it provides full facial coverage stopping just short of covering the cheekbones. The Olde English is the type of style that gives the client a unique look and character.

Full Beard. This style requires very little maintenance and is arguably the most popular beard style. It is necessary to use a trimmer set at about 4 to 6 millimeters to keep it looking neat. The full beard completely covers the upper lip, cheeks, chin and goes all the way back to the neck, and works great for any facial structure.

Those with beards know how much effort and maintenance goes in to shaping a beard and making it look presentable. At Barcelona Hair Academy we want you to be able to offer your clients the best styles for them; and this is why we offer our barbering courses for professionals who want to take a step further in the art of barbering. For more information regarding our professional courses don’t hesitate to contact us.
