To start the course you don’t need to have previous experience as you will learn all the basic principles of hairdressing and aesthetics, but you must want to work hard and be extremely motivated.

The Barcelona Hair Academy’s Beginners Course is a complete hairdressing program designed to transform beginners into experts. It combines theory and practical classes to give you a firm foundation for your future career.

The skills taught on the Beginners Hairdressing Course include techniques such as classic and modern cutting techniques, all types of colouring and styling and an introduction to shaving and beard grooming and other specialist techniques for creating  different finishes and styles. You will learn about the anatomy and structure of skin and hair and  how to apply what you learn on the course to your clients. As a Barcelona Hair Academy student you will be able to identify which cut and color suits your customers best according to their face shape, hair type and style. We will also teach you business skills for the hairdressing industry to give you a basis in product sales, marketing, etc.

From as early as week three you will start to practice your new skills in the hair salon of our academy under the supervision of the teachers.

The course starts in January, April and September. The complete course lasts for 46 weeks  but you can sign up for a Basic, Intermediate or Advanced module of 15 weeks if you prefer.  Classes are small and are in English.

Jeff Ginsburgh and Kim Martin are returning to Barcelona Hair Academy on the 25th and 26th of October for another edition of their fantastic Decades of Decadence Advanced Cutting and Colouring Hairdressing Course.

In this fun and intuitive hairdressing course they will look back at the hairstyles that defined generations and unified “tribes”. You will learn to identify styles and how to turn them into wearable haircuts that could be seen on the streets of London, Paris or New York.

This course is divided into 2 days. On the first day we will be talking about cuts: iconic styles and movements, and on the second you will learn about colour as a complimentary wearable statement; both days will include demonstrations and workshops lead by Jeff Ginsburgh and Kim Martin.

Jeff, an award winning international stylist, comes from London and has over 25 years experience in the hair industry, working for companies like Toni&Guy, L’Oreal and Kevin Murphy. He has worked in TV and for magazines like Vogue Japan, Grazia and Elle, as well on catwalks shows for Vivienne Westwood and Tommy Hilfiger.

Kim Martin was International Creative Director for Colour at Toni&Guy for many years and she is responsible for putting the technique into colour. As the go to colourist for most model agencies in London, her editorial work has appeared in publications such as English Vogue, Marie Claire and Dazed & Confused. She worked on Prada’s Mui Mui label’s first collection launch and with photographers such as Steven Klein, Rankin, Corinne Day and David Sims.

Barcelona Hair Academy is located in the Gracia area of Barcelona and this weekend marks the start of the area’s big Fiesta!!! From the 15th to the 21st of August the streets will be filled with decorations, music and Catalan traditions. If you haven’t been before we strongly suggest that you pay a visit and experience one of Barcelona’s biggest parties.

The programme of events includes every type of music imaginable, human castles, public dances, street markets and  of course plenty to eat and drink.  There is a competition for the best decorated street and the residents spend all year coming up with incredible themed works of art. Each street tends to take the competition seriously and the standards are high. A theme is chosen by each street and this can be anything from dinosaurs to underwater sea life. A tip: Explore the streets during the day to see the most decorations and avoid the sometimes overwhelming crowds at night. It’s also best to check out the street dressings earlier in the week as things can look a bit the worse for wear towards the end of the festivities.

Some of the most best Catalan traditions can be seen during the week – our favourites are the correfoc – literally running with fire… and the Castellers or Human towers.

As you may have guessed by now we love Barcelona with all its traditions and cultural events! And we especially love our “barrio”, Gracia. As you know at Barcelona Hair Academy we love fun hair trends and this latest one is just that. Sand Hair Art is inspired by souvenir bottles of dyed sand children brought home from beach holidays – and ‘My Little Pony’. Very 90s like most trends at the moment. We think this is a great look for festival season.

So how is this look achieved? First the hair is bleached and then rainbow colours are layered into the hair to create a supernatural look. Our creative team first saw this look on the streets of New York while they were working at Mercedes Benz Fashion week but in general the trend is more of a west coast LA thing.

A less extreme alternative is hair chalking. This is where colored chalk is applied to the hair, and sealed with heat to avoid staining clothes and to stop the colors running into each other. Big bulky braids with colorful hair looks amazing.

Our top tip: If you start with a stronger color range it will last you longer and when it washes out you’ll be left with a more pastel color range.

If you want this hair, bear in mind that the upkeep is pretty major, and bleaching your hair will leave it dry and brittle, so hydration and mild sulfate free shampoos are essential. This isn’t a very long lasting colour solution either – it will wash out easily. But if you don’t mind spending a little time and messing up your bathroom and your towels, you can do a lot at home. Crazy Colors has a great range and if you want to soften them you can dilute them with conditioner for a more of a pastel effect.

It’s hard to create the full rainbow at home, but when the salon job washes out you can dip dye your ends with a couple of tones with a little patience and creativity. I wouldn’t recommend trying out home bleaching because bleach is very chemical and there are so many things that can go wrong, hair breakage being a major risk, and if your looking for the mermaid effect, then you probably want to keep your hair looking shiny and happy.

We have split the Barcelona Hair Academy Beginners Course into three manageable modules: Basic Beginners, Intermediate Beginners and Advanced Beginners. Each module last 15 weeks approximately and you can sign up for whichever one suits you best. Whether you would like to start off with the basics and see how you get on or you are already a trained hairdresser and are looking for a few months refresher course.

We also now offer a Men’s Beginners Hairdressing Course. This course is divided into the Basic Beginners, Intermediate Beginners, Advanced Beginners modules and the timetable slightly reduced (10am – 2pm).

Beginners Hairdressing Courses

We know that a great hairstyle can make all the difference to our look but there is no denying that some days our hair just won’t play along. Never fear, Barcelona Hair Academy is here! Our Creative team has come up with five hairup ‘How-tos’ that are guaranteed to make you look great and stop you reaching for the scissors.

The Braided Waterfall

Using a tail comb create a low side parting, section off the hair you want to braid in the front and clip the rest of the hair away to make it easier, then divide your section into 3 and start with your inverted braid,

When you reach the temple, start ldropping every 3rd strand to achieve the waterfall effect. When you reach the back of your head, use some bobby pins to secure it in place.

The Braided half and half

Divide the hair from ear to ear with a centre parting, (clip the hair in the back to keep it out of the way). Create two simple braids just above your ears, keep them quite loose and make sure you braid them downwards to keep them flat against your head. Secure the braids with little elastic bands. Once secured loosen them a little to make them a little fatter. Cross the braids over each other and secure them with bobby pins behind each ear, hiding the pins under the braids and making sure the ends are tucked in. Take some strands down to frame your face. Finish with a little spray and you’re done!

The Braided high bun

Start with a high pony tail on the top of your head, make sure you tilt your head back when you secure it with an elastic, so you get it nice and tight in the back. Take a strand from the pony tail and braid it into a simple three strand braid, secure it with an elastic band.  Twist the remaining hair to create a bun and secure it with bobby pins. Loosen the braid a little to make it appear bigger, wrap it around the bun and secure with a pin. Use your fingers to create a bit more volume at the front, add a bit of volume powder and finish with spray, using the palms of your hands to tighten the sides.

The Low Textured Ponytail

Start by dividing your hair from ear to ear, then put the back of your hair into a low pony tail and secure it with an elastic band. Divide the remaining hair into three, from temple to temple. Starting on one side twist the hair away from the face, secure it with a bobby pin into the pony tail. Then twist the top section the same way and secure with a pin. Twist the other side the opposite way so both sides look the same. Take a section from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around to hide the pins and then pin it to secure it. Loosen the sections carefully to create a tousled, slept-in effect. Finish with some dry wax powder and a little hairspray

The Simple Chignon

Start by dividing your hair into a low side parting thenbrush it down flat and add a little serum to create shine. Create a low ponytail just behind the ear and secure it with an elastic. Divide the ponytail into four sections, using clips to separate them. Then start by rolling each one of the sections into loops, twisting them a little to flatten them against the scalp and to create movement, and secure them around the ponytail. Finish with some spray to hold it in place and avoid fly-aways.

Recently we mentioned Wit Salon & Barber on the Barcelona Hair Academy’s blog. They were present at the Vermut Solidario event and did a great job styling beards for charity. But, who are they and what do they have to do with Barcelona Hair Academy?

Wit Salon & Barber is the official hair salon of Barcelona Hair Academy and it is owned by our very own Creative Director: Emma Kareliussen. Wit Salon & Barber has two locations: our hair academy in Gràcia – carrer de l’Església 4-6, 4 B 1a – and a super cute shop in Raval – carrer de Sant Pau 122.

Both the academy’s superstar teachers, Kyle Shull and Sofia Farnqvist are senior stylists at Wit. Kyle is also the salon manager.  They are all amazing professionals with years of experience in the hair world and very passionate about their careers.

Emma has more than 20 years experience in her field and she has worked all over the world.  She regularly collaborates at the New York and Madrid Fashion Weeks and with many other local projects, such as the Lost&Found markets and Primavera Sound Music Festival.

Kyle started his career in New York City but soon moved to London where he worked for several years in Soho and Nothing Hill. Kyle has worked in all facets of the hairdressing industry; including working with celebrity clients, on film sets and doing bridal hair.

Do you know why barber poles are red, white and blue? The barber pole is a legacy from an era when people went to the barbers, not just for a haircut or a shave but also for medical procedures.  During the middle Ages, bloodletting was a common procedure; they believed that letting blood drain from the veins by cutting them open would cure many maladies. Barbers also pulled teeth and carried out other small surgical procedures.

The look of the barber pole is linked to bloodletting: the pole itself resembles the stick the barbers used to keep the patients arm straight and the colours red and white are both the blood and the bandages used. The blue was added later in France.

Being a barber used to be a very prestigious job and barbers and surgeons were part of the same trade guild until 1745. They helped people to feel better back then, just as they do today; because being a barber is not just about cutting hair and shave beards, it is about making the client look and feel good.
