Barcelona Hair Academy is located in the Gracia area of Barcelona and this weekend marks the start of the area’s big Fiesta!!! From the 15th to the 21st of August the streets will be filled with decorations, music and Catalan traditions. If you haven’t been before we strongly suggest that you pay a visit and experience one of Barcelona’s biggest parties.

The programme of events includes every type of music imaginable, human castles, public dances, street markets and  of course plenty to eat and drink.  There is a competition for the best decorated street and the residents spend all year coming up with incredible themed works of art. Each street tends to take the competition seriously and the standards are high. A theme is chosen by each street and this can be anything from dinosaurs to underwater sea life. A tip: Explore the streets during the day to see the most decorations and avoid the sometimes overwhelming crowds at night. It’s also best to check out the street dressings earlier in the week as things can look a bit the worse for wear towards the end of the festivities.

Some of the most best Catalan traditions can be seen during the week – our favourites are the correfoc – literally running with fire… and the Castellers or Human towers.

As you may have guessed by now we love Barcelona with all its traditions and cultural events! And we especially love our “barrio”, Gracia. We know that a great hairstyle can make all the difference to our look but there is no denying that some days our hair just won’t play along. Never fear, Barcelona Hair Academy is here! Our Creative team has come up with five hairup ‘How-tos’ that are guaranteed to make you look great and stop you reaching for the scissors.

The Braided Waterfall

Using a tail comb create a low side parting, section off the hair you want to braid in the front and clip the rest of the hair away to make it easier, then divide your section into 3 and start with your inverted braid,

When you reach the temple, start ldropping every 3rd strand to achieve the waterfall effect. When you reach the back of your head, use some bobby pins to secure it in place.

The Braided half and half

Divide the hair from ear to ear with a centre parting, (clip the hair in the back to keep it out of the way). Create two simple braids just above your ears, keep them quite loose and make sure you braid them downwards to keep them flat against your head. Secure the braids with little elastic bands. Once secured loosen them a little to make them a little fatter. Cross the braids over each other and secure them with bobby pins behind each ear, hiding the pins under the braids and making sure the ends are tucked in. Take some strands down to frame your face. Finish with a little spray and you’re done!

The Braided high bun

Start with a high pony tail on the top of your head, make sure you tilt your head back when you secure it with an elastic, so you get it nice and tight in the back. Take a strand from the pony tail and braid it into a simple three strand braid, secure it with an elastic band.  Twist the remaining hair to create a bun and secure it with bobby pins. Loosen the braid a little to make it appear bigger, wrap it around the bun and secure with a pin. Use your fingers to create a bit more volume at the front, add a bit of volume powder and finish with spray, using the palms of your hands to tighten the sides.

The Low Textured Ponytail

Start by dividing your hair from ear to ear, then put the back of your hair into a low pony tail and secure it with an elastic band. Divide the remaining hair into three, from temple to temple. Starting on one side twist the hair away from the face, secure it with a bobby pin into the pony tail. Then twist the top section the same way and secure with a pin. Twist the other side the opposite way so both sides look the same. Take a section from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around to hide the pins and then pin it to secure it. Loosen the sections carefully to create a tousled, slept-in effect. Finish with some dry wax powder and a little hairspray

The Simple Chignon

Start by dividing your hair into a low side parting thenbrush it down flat and add a little serum to create shine. Create a low ponytail just behind the ear and secure it with an elastic. Divide the ponytail into four sections, using clips to separate them. Then start by rolling each one of the sections into loops, twisting them a little to flatten them against the scalp and to create movement, and secure them around the ponytail. Finish with some spray to hold it in place and avoid fly-aways.

90s fashion – The return of mom jeans

They used to be extremely uncool, and only worn by soccer moms but now they are super hip and all the cool kids are wearing them. These jeans are slightly fitted at the top with a baggy tapered leg and a high waist, and very comfortable! The best hairstyle to go with this fashion is big and casually swept to the side– think 90s supermodels Cindy Crawford or Linda Evangelista. Soft and wavy and very feminine, but less styled then they used to wear it. No need for hot rollers, just sleep with your hair in a braid if your hair is poker straight and you want to create some movement.

Products: Use dust waxes, like Schwartzkopf Dust It, dry shampoo, and a little serum or argan oil to control the frizz.

Top tip: Dry your hair upside down to create volume at the roots. Keep the side parting low and undefined.

Another cool hair trend is the 90s-inspired minimalist bob. Kate Bosworth, always on trend, went for this crop, combining it with a low parting and a little texture at the ends. Emma Stone wears it a little messier and with a grown out fringe, which gives the look more versatility.

Festival Fashion

The festival season is here, and its time to start thinking about getting your look together. At Barcelona Hair Academy we love scrutinizing the celeb looks and predicting new trends. At the ever fabulous Coachella festival prints were big this year, especially big bold colourful ones. Jeans shorts are still going strong, and as far as the hair goes, the looks are simple, a low messy ponytail, a headband to keep hair out of your face or a thrown on hat. If your hair is blond, you can stick some temporary pastel colour mask on your ends for a cool ombre effect.

One of Barcelona’s biggest festival, Primavera Sound is a little more indie and rocky than the californian boho styled festival, but festival goers still take inspiration from the cool Hollywood crowd. The caftan is the one must have item in your wardrobe this year, but the Barcelona way of wearing it is over cropped shorts, and teamed with brogues, Vans or trainers. Pile on the accessories, bracelets, necklaces, rings on your hands. This is not the time to be minimalist or for taking the advice of Coco Chanel, who said that one would always took one accessory off before leaving the house. This is the time to put one more on before dashing out the door, and being late to meet your mates.

We thought Kylie and Kendall Jenner looked amazing at Coachella, Kendall wearing her shorts a little longer, and Kylie with pastel green hair and a white kaftan.

Primavera Sound is one of the many music festivals that take place in Barcelona. This festival is well known internationally and every year fans wait with baited breath to find out the line up. Barcelona Hair Academy tells you everything you need to know about one of our favourite music festivals.

The event is held at the Parc del Fòrum, in Barcelona, and is one of the largest music festivals in Spain,  with over 100,000 people attending every year. It is known for its eclectic line up, focus on independent music, and a showcase for newly established international and local acts. There are 7-8 stages and they are all outdoors, with the exception of the Auditori, which holds 3,200 people seated.

This year’s line up is, as always, epic. It includes performances from bands like The Strokes, The Replacements, Underworld, The Black Keys, Sleater-Kinney, Patti Smith and Ride. Other note worthy acts include Damien Rice, Antony and the Johnsons, James Blake, Belle and Sebastian and Julian Casablanca + The Voidz among many others.

Full festival tickets give you access to every day of the festival as well as pre-event concerts and the festival closing party, which is amazing. Also, as well as the outdoor concerts, Primavera Sound has set up other events like Primavera Club, an indoor festival that takes place every year in a different city, and PrimaveraPro, an international meeting aimed at the music industry that takes place parallel to Primavera Sound.

The Vermut Solidario is an event that brings together entertainment and charity within a multicultural and innovative framework. The purpose of this event is to bring social and charitable projects closer to the people in a different and fun way. They offer great music, good atmosphere and the best street food – a perfect way to bring out our most charitable selves.

The Vermut Solidario aims to raise funds for those in need, and each event supports a different cause. They also try to raise awareness about problems in society that are often ignored, such as uncommon diseases. The last edition of the Vermut Solidario took place on April 12^th in the old Estrella Damm factory and raised money for Asdent, an association for patients with Dent disease.

Wit Salon & Barber, the Barcelona Hair Academy salon, couldn’t resist supporting this great cause. We set up a stand at the Vermut trimming beards for just 5€; all in the name of a good cause! There was great music from Eclectic Method, Raver Jewish, Nighty Max and Mr. K, and the best street food of this city. Who could ask for more?

We recently held our first Art of Barbering course and, as a hair academy that works hard to teach its students the best techniques, we were really pleased with the results. It was a total success.  This barbering course is one of our favourite hairdressing courses and we want to tell you how it went!

In February we hosted our first barbering course of the season. As we have said before, our courses are designed for small groups; this way everybody has the chance to get up close and get all the attention they need from the tutor. This time we had seven students, the perfect number for this type of training, and they all left having had a positive learning experience.

We demonstrated old school barbering techniques with a modern twist, as it’s important to know the basics and to keep it trendy at the same time. We also talked in depth about beard grooming, which gave our students a real insight into the world of male grooming services; Nowadays men are getting more and more into taking care of their hair and their beards, so maximizing your potential in the barbering field is a must.

By the end of the barbering course our students had been trained in beard styling and cutting and clipper skills.

As you know our hair academy always works with the best professionals on our hairdressing courses, and this time Javier martin lead the course. Javier Martin has spent the last few years working in London at the Tony and Guy Academy and now he is bringing the latest London trends to Barcelona.

We will show you where and how you find inspiration and how to you reach your styling potential through updos.

On Day Two you will learn all the bridal techniques you need to give you the confidence in a skill so many stylists are afraid to tackle. We will go over classic and modern up-do techniques and how to conduct a thorough consultation to keep your bride relaxed on her big day. We will also teach you the latest looks straight off the catwalks at New York and Madrid Fashion Weeks.

Both days will include demonstrations and practical work so you can interiorize what you learn and get the confidence it takes to master these techniques. The format of the classes will involve demonstrations from one of our internationally recognized tutors, theoretical content and finally practicing what you have learned. Through this seeing-learning-doing process we will make sure you interiorize and put into practice everything you need to know to become a top hairdresser.

You don’t need any experience to be part of this course, but we do ask that all our students have a good level of English, are willing to work hard and are as passionate about hairstyling as we are. When you have completed the course you will be ready to start working in a salon as a fully trained Junior Stylist.
